By leveraging Datenna's unique dataset of Chinese military procurements after 2020, we have evalauted Beijing's effort to prepare for "intelligentized" warfare. Several key themes in the Chinese defence sector's interest in acquiring advanced AI technology have been identified, including infrastructure security, information gathering, training, and the widely discussed intelligent combat systems.

These wide ranging military functions are largely supported by research efforts from Chinese institutes, which face no restrictions on collaborating with Western partners. Key bidders have been highlighted, to illustrate the national security risks of tech transfer from research institutes to malign entities in China.
